Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is a public university which aspires to be a University of global excellence in Training, Research and Innovation for Development.

For the last two decades, the university that now hosts the Pan African University Institute of Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation, a Graduate School aimed at promoting integration among African states through higher education and research , has made tremendous progress in training research and technology transfer not only in Kenya but also in Africa.

To strengthen its administrative arm, JKUAT wishes to recruit qualified individuals to fill the following positions:

College Principals


Three Positions

JKUAT colleges are semi-autonomous academic units that house several schools, academic departments and institutes which carry out professional training and innovative research in various disciplines. 

We seek to fill positions of College Principal for the following three colleges:

(i) College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC)

(ii) College of Health Sciences (COHES)

(iii) Nairobi Westlands Campus
 
The position of Principal is a senior post in the University created to give leadership to a college of JKUAT. 

A Principal is appointed to hold office for a term of five years that may be renewed once depending on performance.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Must possess an earned PhD and be professors/Associate professors
  • Must have at least ten (10) years experience in senior academic, research or management positions.
  • Must have held senior administrative posts such as Director/Dean of a Faculty, School, or Institute Campus in a recognized University.
  • Applicants who have held positions equivalent to the advertised position and whose background is in the core programme areas of the college will have an added advantage.
  • Applicants are expected to be familiar with national, regional and global trends in higher education and demonstrate potential to plan, develop and implement academic programmes, institutional  linkages and managerial ability including strategic planning.
  • Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, highest ethical standards, integrity and professionalism.
  • Experience in networking, fundraising and resource mobilization will be an added advantage.
Duties and Responsibilities

Working under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor, the successful applicants shall:
  • Be the academic and administrative head of the University College
  • Have overall responsibility of direction, organization, administration and programmes of the college.
  • Coordinate development and implementation of the academic and administrative policies of the college.
  • Maintain efficiency and good order of the college and ensure proper enforcement of the statutes and regulations.
  • Provide innovative and creative leadership in the areas of planning and development
Dean of Student

Grade 15

Qualifications
  • Must possess a Ph.D. in Educational Administration or any academic discipline, or in a relevant field with 5 years experience in grade 14 or equivalent position.
or
  • Must possess a masters degree in Education Administration or equivalent qualification.
  • Must have five (5) years of progressive and responsible student affairs experience in grade 14 or equivalent position.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversees all student Affairs and welfare in the university
  • Ensure health relationships between the university and administration and its students
  • Coordinate the work of wardens, counselors, entertainment and accommodation services
  • Serve as returning officer for students organizations elections
  • Encourage students to form and develop preferred social clubs and societies
  • Shall be answerable to Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs.
Deputy Dean of Students

Grade 14

Qualifications
  • Must possess a PhD in Educational Administration or in relevant field with five (5) years experience in grade 13 or equivalent position.
or
  • Must possess a Masters degree in Educational Administration with seven (7) years experience in grade 13.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Handle matters on student conduct/discipline
  • Coordinate JKUSO students’ elections and other students organizations in the University
  • Handle students’ room allocation in collaboration with Students Systems Administrator and the Halls Manager
  • Handle constitutions of students clubs and societies
  • Assist in clearance of students at the end of the academic year
  • Perform any other duty assigned by the Dean of Students
University Librarian

Grade 15

Qualifications
  • Must have Ph.D. in Library and Information Studies or equivalent from a recognized University.
  • Must be a member of a relevant professional body.
  • Must have evidence of two scholarly publications or a chapter in a scholarly book since last promotion.
  • Must have five (5) years experience in grade 14 or equivalent position in a large academic Library
or
  • Possess a masters degree in Library and Information studies or equivalent from a recognized university with seven (7) years experience in grade 14 or comparable position.
  • Must have evidence of independent research in Information Science and must have published one scholarly paper or a chapter in a scholarly book.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Planning library activities and facilitating timely provision of information services.
  • Coordinating library activities with a view to facilitating teamwork among staff.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of library services.
  • Facilitating continual improvement of library services to enhance quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Reviewing and implementing strategic objectives of the library in line with the vision and mission of the University.
  • Managing the library staff.
  • Playing a mediatory role between the library and the top University management.
  • Facilitating link between library operations/and those of other university department/stakeholders.
  • Participating in University meetings.
  • Developing strategic measures towards quality library operation aimed at enhancing customer satisfaction.
  • Chairing library management meetings.
Registrar - Research, Production & Extension

Grade 15

Qualifications
  • Must possess Ph.D. in relevant field.
  • Must have at least (5) years experience in Grade 14 or comparable position
or
  • Must possess masters degree and have at least seven (7) years experience in the relevant field of experience in grade 14 or comparable position.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administrative planning and control
  • Development and supervision of staff
  • Efficient utilization of resources
  • Administrative communications
  • Administrative record management
  • Staff performance management
The candidate will perform any other duties assigned by Deputy Vice Chancellor,Research Production and Extension.

Director Sports and Games

Grade 15

Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have a PhD in Physical Education with emphasis in Sports/Administration.
or
  • Have a masters degree in Physical Education with emphasis in Sports/Administration plus (10) ten years’ experience at the level of grade 14.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Preparation of sports programmes
  • Preparation of annual sports calendar
  • Prepare estimate budgets
  • Preparation of university sports activities budget
  • Be overall in charge of all university sports facilities and equipment
  • Be overall in charge of staff in the department including staff appraisal
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs.
Chief Security Officer

Grade 15

Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have attained rank of Chief Inspector of Police or Major in the Armed Forces.
  • Must possess advanced certificate in first aid.
Duties and Responsibilities:

(i) Establishing and directing policies and practices covering physical security, internal security, loss prevention, safety, risk management and emergency preparedness as required to protect employees,
students and University assets.

(ii) Directing the efforts of security unit and affiliates in these areas, investigating losses, cases of serious security violations and conflicts of interest.

(iii) Conducting personnel security checks and handling other matters as requested by the Vice Chancellor.

(iv) Maintaining continual liaison with government, industries and other organizations in carrying out the assigned mission.

(v) Carrying out assessments of local security conditions within campus area.

(vi) Implementing security training for all staff.
